Question 363087: In a stream whose current flows at the speed of 3 miles/hr, a man rowed upstream and returned to his starting point in 6.25 hr. If the man rows at a speed of 5 km/hr, in still water, how long did he row upstream. Answer by ewatrrr(24785) (Show Source):
Hi,
Let x represent time took to row upstream. then time downstream would be (6.25hr - x)
d= r*t (distance upstream and downstream the same)
(5mph - 3mph)x = (5mph +3mph) (6.25hr - x)
2x = 8*6.25 -8x
10x = 50hr
x = 5 hr
checking our answer
2mph*5hr = 8mph * 1.25hr = 10
