You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Rate*Time=Distance
R%2At=D
.
.
.
Convert 11 minutes to hours.
11%281%2F60%29=11%2F60 hours
In the 11 minutes, the first car moves,
D=60%2811%2F60%29=11miles
The distance traveled by the first car is,
D%5B1%5D=60t%2B11
The distance traveled by the second car is,
D%5B2%5D=65t
.
.
.
Find t when D%5B1%5D=D%5B2%5D
60t%2B11=65t
5t=11
highlight%28t=11%2F5%29hr

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In 11 min, the 1st car travels
d+=+r%2At
d+=+60%2A%2811%2F60%29
d+=+11 mi
Assume you have a stopwatch and you start it
when the 2nd car enters the freeway.
Write equations for both cars that show
d%5Bx%5D as the distance that the 2nd car goes
in order to catch the 1st car.
1st car:
(1) d%5Bx%5D+-+11+=+60t
(1) d%5Bx%5D+=+60t+%2B+11
2nd car:
(2) d%5Bx%5D+=+65%2At
Note that the time t is when you stop the stopwatch
Set (1) = (2)
60t+%2B+11+=+65t
5t+=+11
t+=+2.2 hr
It will take 2 hrs and 12 min for 2nd to catch 1st
check:
(1) d%5Bx%5D+-+11+=+60t
(1) d%5Bx%5D+-+11+=+60%2A2.2
d%5Bx%5D+=+132+%2B+11
d%5Bx%5D+=+143 mi
and
(2) d%5Bx%5D+=+65%2At
(2) d%5Bx%5D+=+65%2A2.2
d%5Bx%5D+=+143 mi
OK
