Question 252099: Thank you tutors for being here to assist those of us who struggle from time to time in our quest to learn this language of mathmatics... God Bless all of your combined efforts!!
I have the answer to this question but I need to see it expressed in algebraic form. Please show the steps necessary in solving the following question...
"If I purchase an item that has been discounted 20% and the discount saves me 45 dollars, how much did I pay for the item?" Thanks, Hank

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The amount of the discount is 20% of the original price, which is $45.

20% of x=45
.20x=45

Divide both sides by .20
%28.20x%29%2F.20=45%2F.20
x=450%2F2=225

The original price was $225. You saved $45, so you paid $180.

Check: If the original price was $225 less 20%, that would be a discount of $225*.2= $45, so you did indeed save $45.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
20% of the price = 45$
100% of the price = (45/20)x100 = 225$
So the amount paid for the item = 225-45 = 180$
