: Boating on the lake The Clarke family went sailing on a lake. their boat averaged 6 kilometer per hour. the Rourke family took their outboard runabout for a trip on the lake for the same amount of time. their boat averaged 14 kilometers per hour. the Rourke traveled 20 kilometers farther than the Clarke family. how many hours did each family spend on their boat trip?
unsure how to even start on this never understand word problems.

-------------------
You only need to know that distance = rate*time
-------------------
Clarke DATA:
rate 6 kph ; time = x hrs ; distance = rt = 6x km
------------------
Rourke DATA:
rate = 14 kph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 14x km
-------------------------
Equation:
Rourke distance - Clarke distance = 20 km
14x - 6x = 20
8x = 20
x = 3 1/3 hours

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Speed x Time = Distance

Clarke family's speed, times their time = Rourke family's speed, times their time, less 20

Clarke family's speed (6 k/hr)

Clarke family's time (Let it be T)

Rourke family's speed (14 k/hr)

Rourke family's time (T - same as Clarke family's)

D(ST) = D(ST)

6(T) = 14(T) - 20

- 8T = - 20

T, or time each family spent on their boat trip was: %28-20%29%2F%28-6%29 = highlight_green%282.5%29 hours.
