Question 19770: I'm very bad at word problems and this one seems to make me more confused!!
Train A leaves depot A and travels to depot C 400 miles away and Train B leaves depot B one hr later and travels 150 miles to depot C. If Train A is travelling 10mph faster than train B and they arrive at depot C at the same time, how fast was each train travelling?
Thank you sooo much!!!!
I got this far but that's not really an equation: A=400miles(10+b) B=150miles(A-60min) Found 2 solutions by Paul, wuwei96815:Answer by Paul(988) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Train A leaves depot A and travels to depot C 400 miles away and Train B leaves depot B one hr later and travels 150 miles to depot C. If Train A is travelling 10mph faster than train B and they arrive at depot C at the same time, how fast was each train travelling?
DEPOT A TO B = 250miles
DEPOT A TO C = 400miles
DEPOT B TO C = 150miles
TOTAL = 800miles Train a = 400+10x Train b=150+(x+1)
400+10(x+1)+150=800
400+10x+10+150=800
10x+560=800
10x=240
x=24 One of the train is travelling at 24 miles per hour
and the other is travelling at 34mph
