This problem can be solved by substitution.

distance = speed x time

distance for passenger train = 60mi/h x t
distance for freight train = 40mi/h x (t+1.5h)

60mi/h x t = 40mi/h x (t + 1.5h)
60t = 40t + 60
60t - 40t = 60
t = 3 hours

The passenger train traveled for 3 hours
The freight train traveled for 4.5 hours
