How far apart they start it does not matter. It has no effect on the question asked.

They approach each other at the sum of their speeds, so that's 9000 + 21000, or 30,000 mph. Divide by 60 (60 mins/hour): 30,000/60 = 500 miles/minute.
So they're 500 miles apart 1 minute before collision.
