: Susie left her home at 11 am traveling along Route 1 at 30 miles per hour. At I pm, her brother Richard left home and started after her on the same road at 45 miles per hour. At what time did Richard catch up to Susie. I know the formula t=d/r but how do you plug in everything since there are more steps. Thank You! This question is from textbook

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Robert started 2 hours later than Susie, so by the time Robert started, Susie had traveled d=30%2A2=60miles. Robert is traveling 15 miles per hour faster than Susie 45+-+30+=+15, so the question becomes: How long does it take to cover 60 miles at 15 mph?
:
t=60%2F15=4, so it takes him 4 hours to catch up.
