: ok...A page of a school yearbook is 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches. The left and right margins are 1 inch and 2 1/2 inches, respectively.. The space between pictures is 1/4 inch.. How wide can each picture be to fit 3 across the width of the page.
a. Write verbal model for this problem
LM + RM + 2(space b/w pics)+ 3(width of pics) = page width
I must be doing something really stupid, because I can't come up with the correct answer...
1+2 1/2+2(1/4) +3(w)=8 1/2
1+5/2 +2/4...
4/4+10/4+2/4...
16/4+3w=17/2
4+3w=17/2
3w=17/2-4
3w=34/4-4/4
3w=30/4
30/4 *1/3
30/12
This is not the right answer.....help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what am i doing wrong here??

1 + 5/2 +2(1/4) + 3(width of pics) = 17/2
1 + 5/2 + 1/2 + 3 width of pics = 17/2
3 width of pics = 9/2
width of pics = 3/2 in

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
WIDTH=8.5-1-2.5=5 INCHES FOR THE PICTURES.
[5-.25(3-1)]/3
[5-.75+.25]/3
(5.25-.75)/3
4.5/3=1.5 INCHES MAXIMUM FOR EACH OF THE 3 PICTURES.
