You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A girl rode her bike out into the country at 20mph and returned along the same route at 15mph. If the round trip took 5 hours and 50 minutes how far out did she travel?
--------
Avg speed or the round trip = 2*20*15/(20+15) = 600/35 = 120/7 mi/hr
-----
RT distance = (120/7)*(35/6) = 100 miles
50 miles each way.

A girl rode her bike out into the country at 20 mph and returned along the same route at 15 mph.
If the round trip took 5 hours and 50 minutes how far out did she travel?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let D be the distance she traveled in each direction.
Then she spent D%2F20 hours moving at the speed of 20 mph,
and she spent D%2F15 hours moving at the speed of 15 mph.
In all, she spent 5 hours and 50 minutes = 55%2F6 hours = 35%2F6 hours.
It gives you an equation
D%2F20+%2B+D%2F15 = 35%2F6.
To solve it, multiply both sides by 60, which is the Least common denominator. You will get
3D + 4D = 350,   or
7D = 350  ===>  D = 350%2F7 = 50.
Answer. The distance in each direction is 50 miles.
Solved.
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let T1 be the time for 20mph and T2 be the time for 15mph, then
:
1) T1 + T2 = 5 and 50/60 = 5.83 hours
2) 20 * T1 = distance(d)
3) 15 * T2 = d
:
solve equation 1 for T2 and set equation 2 = equation 3
:
T2 = 5.83 - T1
:
20 * T1 = 15 * (5.83 - T1)
:
20T1 = 87.45 - 15T1
:
35T1 = 87.45
:
T1 = 2.4986
:
She traveled 20 * 2.4986 = 49.972 miles out
