Question 1021535: Your aunt and uncle took turns driving on a 580-mile trip that took 10 hours. Your uncle drove at a constant speed of 60 mph and your aunt drove a constant speed of 55 mph. How long did each person drive?
we have tried=
580 = 55/x + 60/y

600 = 55x + 60y

The equation stating 600=55x+60y makes no sense.

RT=D is basic travel rates rule. Assign variables and make a data table.

                 rate            time           distance

UNCLE             60              y              60y

AUNT              55              x              55x

Totals                            10             580

I assigned variables to times, but you assigned variables to distances. This is simply a matter of choice of the person analyzing and solving the problem. Either way is good.

Your aunt and uncle took turns driving on a 580-mile trip that took 10 hours. Your uncle drove at a constant speed of 60 mph and your aunt drove a constant speed of 55 mph. How long did each person drive?
we have tried=
580 = 55/x + 60/y

600 = 55x + 60y
Let time aunt drove, be T
Then time uncle drove = 10 - T
We then get the following DISTANCE equation: 55T + 60(10 - T) = 580
55T + 600 - 60T = 580
55T - 60T = 580 - 600
- 5T = - 20
T, or time aunt drove = , or hours
Time uncle drove = 10 - 4, or hours
