In a 2-mile race competition

Problem 1

In a two-mile race,  Ed  can beat  Faith  by  1/5  of a mile.  In a two-mile race,
Faith can beat Matt by  1/10  of a mile.  If  Ed  and  Matt  were to have a two mile race,  by how much would  Ed  win?

Solution

Let  V%5BE%5D  be the Ed's rate, in miles per hour;

     V%5BF%5D be the Faith's rate, and

     V%5BM%5D  be the Matt rate.

Since in a two-mile race, Ed can beat Faith by 1%2F5 = 0.2 of a mile, it means that the ratio of their rates is V%5BE%5D%2FV%5BF%5D = 2%2F%282-0.2%29 = 2%2F1.8.

    It is totally clear: in that time as Ed will complete the 2 miles race, Faith will cover only 2-0.2 = 1.8 miles.

Next, since in a two-mile race, Faith can beat Math by 1%2F10 = 0.1 of a mile, it means that the ratio of their rates is V%5BF%5D%2FV%5BM%5D = 2%2F%282-0.1%29 = 2%2F1.9.

It implies that the ratio of the rates  V%5BE%5D%2FV%5BM%5D = %28V%5BE%5D%2FV%5BF%5D%29%2A%28V%5BF%5D%2FV%5BM%5D%29 = %282%2F1.8%29%2A%282%2F1.9%29 = 4%2F%281.8%2A1.9%29 = 2%2F%28%28%281.8%2A1.9%29%2F2%29%29 = 2%2F1.71.

It means that in the 2 miles race Ed can beat Matt by 2 - 1.71 = 0.29 miles. ANSWER
