Climbing a coconut tree up and down

Problem 1

Many romy can climb a coconut tree at the rate of  10 feet per minute and return at  20 feet per minute.
If it took him  3  minutes to climb and return,  what is the height of the coconut?

Solution

Let x be the tree's height.

Then the time for climbing up from the ground to the upper point is x%2F10 minutes,

while the time returning back os x%2F20 minutes.

Therefore, the time equation is

x%2F10 + x%2F20 = 3   minutes.

Multiply both sides by 20. You will get

2x + x = 3*20

3x = 60  ====>  x = 60%2F3 = 20 ft.

Answer. The height of the coconut is 20 feet.
