Question 963445: How do you make a number 7 times smaller?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
it appears that there is a simple rule that will work.
if you want a number that is 7 times bigger than another number, then multiply that number by 8.
if you want a number that is 7 times smaller than another number, then divide that number by 8.
for example:
let your smaller number be 10.
you want a number that is 7 times bigger.
multiply 10 by 8 and you will get 80.
the difference between 10 and 80 is 70 which is 7 * 10 which means that 80 is 7 times bigger than 10.
now we'll go in reverse.
let your larger number be 80.
you want a number that is 7 times smaller.
divide 80 by 8 and you get 10.
the difference between 10 and 80 is 70 which is 7 * 10 which means that 10 is 7 times smaller than 80.
the reference has to be the smaller number in both cases.
with the smaller to larger case, it's pretty clear.
with the larger to smaller case, it's necessary because you can't subtract 7 times the larger number from the larger number because you will wind up with a very large negative number in all cases, no mater how large the larger number is.
80 is 7 times larger than 10.
10 is 7 times smaller than 80.
that's my take.
closest reference to this type of problem that i could find is shown below:

their recommendation is to avoid terminology such as the one you were looking to find the definition of.
the definition i gave you appears to be accurate.
i would never think of using it.
it's way too confusing.
