Assume that y is the larger number.
Based on the question, we know that

We also know that since "y" is 11 more than "x" we can also assume that
+y+=+x+%2B+11+
With this information given, we can substitute y in for x like so:

+x+%2B+x+%2B+11+=+55+ Substitution
+2x+%2B+11+=+55+ Combine Like Terms
