Let +y+ = the length of the 2nd piece
given:
(1) +x+=+3y+-+7+
(2) +x+%2B+y+=+29+

(1) +-x+%2B+3y+=+7+
(2) +x+%2B+y+=+29+
Add the equations
+4y+=+36+
+y+=+9+
and, since
(2) +x+%2B+y+=+29+
(2) +x+%2B+9+=+29+
(2) +x+=+20+
The length of the 1st piece is 20 ft
The length of the 2nd piece is 9 ft
