Lupe is thinking of two 3 digit numbers. The sum of the numbers is 619.
Their difference is 33. What are the numbers?
:
Write an equation for each statement, the two number are a & b
a + b = 619
a - b = 33
-------------adding eliminates b, find a
2a = 652
a = 326
then
326 - b = 33
b = 326 - 33
b = 293

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the numbers be +x+ and +y+
given:
+x+%2B+y+=+619+
+x+-+y+=+33+ Add the equations
-------------
+2x+=+652+
+x+=+326+
and, since
+x+-+y+=+33+
+326+-+y+=+33+
+y+=+326+-+33+
+y+=+293+
The numbers are 293 and 326
check:
+x+%2B+y+=+619+
+326+%2B+293+=+619+
+619+=+619+
OK
