x+y = 6

let x be the longer piece and y be the shorter piece
4y = 2x
...
Rearrange x+y=6 as x = 6-y and substitute into 4y=2x
4y = 2(6-y)
Distribute the 2
4y = 12 - 2y
Add 2y to both sides
4y + 2y = 12
6y = 12
Divide both sides by 6
y = 2
If y = 2, then x = 6-2 = 4
...
Therefore, the length of the two pieces are 2 yds and 4 yds
