Question 656141: The sum of three numbers is 496. The second number is 8/15 of the first, the first number is less than the third to 2 3/4 times, find each number. Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Three numbers: a, b, c
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
The sum of three numbers is 496.
a + b + c = 496
:
The second number is 8/15 of the first,
b = a
:
the first number is less than the third to 2 3/4 times,
c = 2a
same as
c = a
:
Replace b and c in the 1st equation
a + a + a = 496
Get rid of those annoying fractions, multiply by 60, results
60a + 4(8a) + 15(11a) = 60(496)
60a + 32a + 165a = 29760
257a = 29760
a = 29760/257
a ~ 115.80; I was hoping for an integer here, but we'll just charge ahead
b = (8/15)*115.8 ~ 61.75
c = (11/4}}}* 115.8 ~ 318.45
:
See if these devils add up!
115.8
61.75
318.45
--------
496.00!
:
The only thing I can think of is, I misinterpreted:
" the first number is less than the third to 2 3/4 times, "
Certainly a confusing way to say whatever they were trying to say.
