You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two numbers, a & b
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"two integers have a mean of 170."
%28a%2Bb%29%2F2 = 170
a + b = 2(170)
a + b = 340
:
"the first number is 4 times the second number."
a = 4b
:
In the 1st simplified equation, substitute a with 4b
4b + b = 340
5b = 340
b = 340/5
b = 68
:
Find a
a = 4(68)
a = 272

:
You can confirm this by finding the mean of these two numbers
