Question 362903: I came across a problem today in my Algebra 2 Book that I am not sure how to approach. I know sum means addition, but what does coefficient supposed to mean in this problem? Would doing 4x+4y be a step in the right direction? I am expected to know this for the upcoming quiz, and any help on this will be very much appreciated. My problem is not knowing what it is asking exactly.
problem:
Rick's typing speed in WPM(words per minute) equals the sum of the coefficients of the 5 terms of (x+y)4. How many words per minute can Rick type?
help is appreciated,
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! there seems to be an exponentiation sign missing
the problem is to expand the binomial (x + y)^4
___ then add (sum) the coefficients of the terms to find Rick's typing speed
you are only interested in the numerical value of the coefficients
use Pascal's Triangle or the binomial theorem
