Solve: 9 more than the quotient of a number and 3 is 14

Let x = "a number"
:
Write what it says:
9 + = 14
Subtract 9 from both sides
= 14 - 9
= 5
:
multiply both sides by 3, get rid of the denominator
x = 3*5
x = 15
