Question 1043474: A number exceeds its one-third by 50. What is the number?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x = the number.
1/3 of the number would be x/3.
you get x = x/3 + 50
multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to get 3x = x + 150
subtract x from both sides of the equation by x to get 2x = 150
divide both sides of the equation by 2 to get x = 75.
75 = 75/3 + 50 which is equal to 25 + 50 which is equal to 75.
solution looks good.
the number is 75.
