The number is x
(x/3)+12=(x/2); twelve less means is we add 12 to it, they are equal.
multiply everything by a common denominator of 6.
2x+72=3x
x=72
(1/3) of 72 is 24
that is 12 fewer than 36 which is half 72.

Multiply through by LCD = 6

                  2N = 3N - 72
                  -N = -72
                   N = 72

Checking the words:
