Question 97448: How many ounces of pure gold must be added to five ounces of something that is 1% gold in order that the mixture is 6% gold?
I tried working it out but I am not sure if I did it right.
x + 5(.01)= .06(x+5)
x + .05 = .06x + .30
x + .05 - .05 - .06x = .06x - .06x + .30 - .05
.94x = .25
.94x/.94 = .25/.94
x= .27 ounces

Question 98496: A radiator contains 6 liters of 25% antifreeze solution. How much should be drained and replaced with pure antifreeze to produce a 33% antifreeze solution?
So far, I know that the first solution contains 6 liters and I need to multiply that by 25%. Then since we are "replacing" pure antifreeze to the mixture that is 100% that I need to multiply to the unknown mixture of x+6 (which is my second solution) so that I can produce a 33% solution. Does this make any sense? I'm not sure how to do this. Thank You

Question 99099: Should this problem be worded differently - the word water evaporated changed to water added?
How much water must be evaporated from 50 liters of a 65% salt solution to produce a solution that is a 40% salt solution.
.65(50) = .40y
50 - x = y
where x= water evaporated and y = new amount of the solution with 40% salt.
Substituting in 50 - x for y:
32.5 = .40(50 - x)
32.5 = 20 - .40x
12.5 = .40x
-31.25 = x
When I solve this problem I get x = water evaported = -31.25.
To decrease the percentage of salt, you need to add water, correct?
