Question 184025: I have a word problem that I cannot figure out.
Problem is:
The Nature Center sells bird seed for 75 cents per pound and sunflower seed for $1.10 per pound. To the nearest pound, how many pounds of sunflower seed should be used to create a 50-pound mixture that sells for $0.90 per pound.
I have tried the following: 1.10x+.75x = .90(50) and 1.10x+.75x = .90(50+2x).
The first one came close to the answer but still not the answer.
Thank you,
Rodney Clifton

Question 184199: This is a teacher generated question.
How many liters of a 30% alcohol solution must be mixed with 80 liters of a 80% solution to get a 40% solution.
I've tried the following, but I'm not sure it's right at all.
a+b=80L
30a+80b=3200
Multiply by -30 to use the elimination format, this give you:
-30a - 30b = -2400L
30a + 80b = 3200L
50b = 800
b=16L, which makes a = 64L

Mixture problem II
You have two large 2 liter container and a small cup of unknown volume. At the beginning you have 1.2 liter of acid solution of unknown concentration in the left container, and 0.9 liter pure acid in the right one. We take one cup of solution from the left container and putting it into the right one. After that we take one cup of the resulting solution from the right container and put into the left container. Finally we again put one cup solution from the left container into the right one. At the end, we have 50% acid solution in the left container and 80% acid solution in the right one. How large is the cup, and what was the initial acid concentration in the left container?

Question 186507: Peanuts worth $2.90 per pound were mixed with cashews worth $4.60 per pound to make 51 pounds of a mixture worth $3.50 per pound. How many pounds of each were used?
Put x= pounds of peanuts and y= pound of cashews and make the equations as follows:
2.9*x + 4.6*y = 3.5*(x+y)
x + y = 51
solve the 2 equations as follos:
2.9x + 4.6y = 3.5*(x+y)= 3.5*51= 178.5
make x+y = 51 becomes -2.9x -2.9y =-2.9*51= -147.9
===> 4.6y-2.9y = 178.5- 147.9
1.7y = 30.6
y = 30.6/1.7
y = 18
then x= 51 - 18 = 33
conclusion: peanuts have 18pounds and cashew have 33 pounds to be used.
