Question 856680: if 2/3 of pound of metal cost 6.00,how much does a pound cost?
Answer by josmiceli(19441) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +x+ = cost of 1 pound of metal
Set up a direct proportion:
+6+%2F+%28+2%2F3%29+=+x+%2F+1+
Multiply both sides by +2%2F3+
+6+=+%282%2F3%29%2Ax+
Multiply both sides by +3+
+18+=+2x+
+x+=+9+
A pound costs 9.00
-------------------
If you haven't had algebra yet,
solve it this way:
2/3 pounds costs 6.00
1/3 pound costs 3.00
3 times 1/3 = 1, so
1 pound costs 3 times 3.00 = 9.00
