A farmer keeps some animals on a strict diet. Each animal is to receive 14.7 grams of protein and 7.9 grams of carbohydrates. The farmer has two food mixes with nutrients shown in the illustration. How many grams of each mix should be used to provide the correct nutrients to the animal?
Mix Protein Carbohydrates
Mix A 12% 9%
Mix B 15% 5%
---------------
Let A be the amount of mix A
Let B be the amount of mis B
-------------
Protein EQUATION:
0.12A + 0.15B = 14.7
0.09A + 0.15B = 7.9
---------------
Multiply thru both equations by 100.
--------------
12A + 15B = 1470
9A + 5B = 790
---------
Multiply thru the 2nd equation by 3:
12A + 15B = 1470
27A + 15B = 2370
---------------
Subtract the 1st equation from the 2nd to solve for A:
15A = 900
A = 60 grams
Substitute and solve for B:
9*60 + 5B = 790
5B = 250
B = 50 grams
