Let x = amt of 20% solution required
:
We know then, that (x+40) will be the final amt.

A simple equation, (decimals representing the per cent)
.05(40) + .20x = .10(x+40)
:
2 + .2x = .1x + 4
:
.2x - .1x = 4 - 2
:
.1x = 2
x = 2/.1
x = 20 liters of the 20% salt required
:
Check: .05(40) + .2(20) = .1(20 + 40)
2 + 4 = .1(60)
