So if you mix x liters of the weaker with y liters of the 
stronger you'll have 2 liters of liquid. so the first 
equation is

       x + y = 2

40& of the x liters is .4x liters of pure alcohol and
80& of the y liters is .8x liters of pure alcohol. 
So that totals up 50% of the 2 liters of liquid, which 
is .5 times 2 or 1 liter, so

    .4x + .8y = 1

Solve that system

x = 3%2F2 and y = 1%2F2
