Angela needs 20 quarts of 50% antifreeze solution in her radiator. She plans to obtain this by mixing some pure antifreeze with an appropriate amount of 40% antifreeze solution. How many quarts of each should she use? This question is from textbook Elementary and Intermediate algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Angela needs 20 quarts of 50% antifreeze solution in her radiator. She plans to obtain this by mixing some pure antifreeze with an appropriate amount of 40% antifreeze solution. How many quarts of each should she use?
If the total amount of solution is: 20 qts
And we call amount of the pure antifreeze solution: x
Then the rest of the mixture is 40% solution: 20-x
:
Then the amount of antifreeze in pure antifreeze is: 1*x=x
Then the amount of antifreeze in the 40% solution is: .40(20-x)
Then the amoung of antifreeze in the miture of 50% solution is: .50(20)
:
Our problem to solve is:
x+.40(20-x)=.50(20)
x+8-.4x=10
.6x+8=10
.6x+8-8=10-8
.6x=2
.6x/.6=2/.6
x=3.33... qts
The amount of pure alcohol is:x=3.33...qts
The amount of 40% solution is: 20-x=20-3.33...=16.66...pts
Round off where your teacher tells you to.
