No, it's not a number of pounds, it's a fraction of a box.

Katherine has eaten 5%2F8 of a box of candy.
Therefore what's left after that is 

1 box - 5%2F8 of a box = 8%2F8 of a box - 5%2F8 of a box = 3%2F8 of a box.

So half of 3%2F8 is expr%283%2F8%29expr%281%2F2%29 or 3%2F16 of a box.
That's how much she gives Mary and that's also how much she has left.
