Question 494593: The number of pounds in y ounces
Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! There are 16 ounces in a pound.
.
So if you have a 32 ounce package of something, ask yourself how many pounds does it weigh. You can probably tell that it is 2 pounds. How did you do that? You just divide the number of ounces by 16 to convert it to pounds.
.
In equation form use Lbs to represent pounds and oz to represent ounces and you can write that:
.
Lbs = oz/16
.
Some examples. Suppose you had a box that weighed 64 ounces. You could get the weight in pounds by using the equation and substituting 64 for oz:
.
Lbs = 64/16 = 4
.
So a 64 oz box weighs 4 pounds.
.
How about a 48 ounce box? Substitute 48 for oz in the equation:
.
Lbs = 48/16 = 3
.
A 48 oz box weighs 3 pounds.
.
What about a 12 ounce box?
.
Lbs = 12/16
.
Note that 12 and 16 are both divisible by 4 and this becomes:
.
Lbs = (4*3)/(4*4)
.
One of the fours in the denominator will cancel with the 4 in the numerator and you are left with:
.
Lbs = 3/4
.
So a 12 ounce box is three-quarters of a pound.
.
How many pounds would a 24 ounce loaf of bread weigh?
.
Lbs = 24/16
.
Both the numerator and the denominator have 8 as a common factor as follows:
.
Lbs = (8*3)/(8*2)
.
Cancel the 8 in the numerator with the 8 in the denominator and the equation becomes:
.
Lbs = 3/2
.
So a 24 ounce loaf weighs 3 halves of a pound or more commonly one and one-half pounds.
.
Hope this helps you to see the relationship between pounds and ounces.
