You can put this solution on YOUR website!
How much 5% maple syrup and water mixture must be added to 100% maple syrup to produce 5 quarts of syrup that is 10% maple syrup?
:
Let x = amt 5% maple syrup
Then
(5 - x) = amt of 100% maple syrup required
:
.05x + 1.0(5-x) = .10(5)
:
.05x + 5 - 1x = .5
:
.05x - 1x = .5 - 5
:
-.95x = -4.5
x = %28-4.5%29%2F%28-.95%29
x = +4.737 qts of the 5% mixture
:
Check solution in original equation:
.05(4.737) + 1(5 - 4.737) = .10(5)
.237 + .263 =5
