Let x=number of quarts of the 60% juice needed
Now we know that the pure carrot juice in the 60% juice (0.60x) plus the amount of pure carrot juice in the 12% juice (0.12*80) has to equal the amount of pure carrot juice in the final mixture (0.40(80+x)) so our equation to solve is:
0.60x+0.12*80=0.40(80+x) get rid of parens
0.60x+9.6=32+0.40x subtract 0.40x and also 9.6 from each side
0.60x-0.40x+9.6-9.6=0.40x-0.40x+32-9.6 collect like terms
0.20x=22.4 divide both sides by 0.20
x= 112 --------------------number of qts of 60% juice needed

67.2+9.6=76.8
