What quantity of 75 percent acid solution mist be mixed with a 30 percent solution to produce 1080 mL of a 50 percent solution?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let V be the volume of the 75% acid solution to be mixed.
Then the volume of the 30% solution must be 1080 mL.
Your governing equation is the concentration equation
%280.75%2AV+%2B+0.3%2A%281080-V%29%29%2F1080 = 0.5.
Simplify and solve it:
0.75V + 324 - 0.3V = 0.5*1080,
0.45V = 540 - 324  --->  0.45V = 216  --->  V = 216%2F0.45 = 480 mL.
Answer.  480 mL of the 75% solution must be mixed with 1080-480 = 600 mL of the 50% solution.
