presumably the bucket is full to capacity and each bucket has the same volume.

this means that, if you divide each bucket into 9 parts, then each part will contain the same volume as well.

what this means is that 1 part of sand takes up the same volume as 1 part of salt.

what's different is the weight.

6.5 tons of sand divided by 9 is equal to (6.5)/9 tons of sand for each part.

4.5 tons of salt divided by 9 is equal to (4.5)/9 tons of salt for each part.

in one bucket of 8 part sand and 1 part salt mixture, the salt would weigh 4.5/9 tons.

the whole bucket containing 8 parts of sand and 1 part of salt would weigh 8 * 6.5/9 + 1 * 4.5/9 = 5.802469136 tons.
