Question 30383: Stan and Hilda can mow the lawn in 40 minutes if they work together. If Hilda works twice as fast as Stan, how long would it take Stan to mow the lawn alone?
I set this up as if Stan = 2x and Hilda = x
then:
40 min (1/x + 1/2x)
= 40/x + 40/2x = 40+20 = 60 x
So Hilda would take 60 minutes and Stan 120 minutes, but this doesn't seem right.

Next-door neighbors Bob and Jim use hoses from both houses to fill Bob's swimming pool. They know it takes 18 hours using both hoses. They also know that Bob's hose, used alone, takes 20% less time than Jim's hose alone. How much time is required to fill the pool by each hose alone?
let x = the faster hose
let .8x = the slower hose (80% capacity)

I am confused b/c when you divide 12 into 128, the calculator gives you 10.66666666666, etc. Isn't 10.667 the same thing as 10.7 rounded off? What do you think the best answer is?
