Question 929659: i don't know how to solve this problem
a garden that is 4 meters wide and 6 meters long is to have a uniform border such that the area of the border is the same as the area of the garden. find the width

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the uniform width of the border.

Area of garden, 4%2A6.
Area of border combined with garden, %284%2B2x%29%286%2B2x%29. A picture helps to see this.
Area of just the border, %284%2B2x%29%286%2B2x%29-4%2A6.

You want the combined area to be twice the garden area:
%284%2B2x%29%286%2B2x%29=2%2A4%2A6, to avoid the extra step (do you need it?)

Solving that for x should be no big deal. Simplify, and do what skills you know for quadratic equations.
%282%2Bx%29%283%2Bx%29=2%2A6
