Question 913040: Diagonal of football field:
A football field is 100 yd long from goal line to goal line and 160 ft wide. If a player ran diagonally across the field from one goal line to the other, than how far did he run
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1 yard = 3 feet
100 yards = 300 feet (multiply both sides by 3)
We have a right triangle with side lengths a = 300 ft, b = 160 ft, and an unknown hypotenuse c. Use the pythagorean theorem to find c.
Apply the square root to both sides
The player ran exactly 340 feet. This is equivalent to 340/3 = 113.333 yards approximately. To convert from feet to yards, you divide by 3.
