How long would it take Rusty and Gary to wash a horse if they
worked together?
2. Solve the following parallel process word problem:
Jessica can wash a horse in 1 hour. If she assists with Rusty and
and Gary (from Problem #1 above), how long will it take the three
of them working together to wash a horse.

( 1 horse washed ) / ( 1 hr )
Gary's rate:
( 1 horse washed ) / ( 2 hrs )
Working together:
( 1 horse washed ) / ( t hrs )

Multiply both sides by +2t+
+2t+%2B+t+=+2+
+3t+=+2+
+t+=+2%2F3+
It would take them 2/3 hr working together

1%2F1+%2B+1%2F2+=+1%2Fx |Multiplying thru by 2x so as all denominators = 1

    2x + 1x = 2

      3x = 2

       x = 2/3 hr together

1%2F1+%2B+1%2F1+%2B+1%2F2+=+1%2Fx

    2x + 2x + 1x = 2

      5x = 2

       x = 2/5 hr together
