You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = number of cookies eaten

You start out with 11 cookies. Then you subtract off x cookies that are eaten. Afterwards, you add on 12 more cookies. So you'll have 11-x%2B12 cookies. This is equal to 17.

So,

11-x%2B12=17

23-x=17

-x=17-23

-x=-6

x=6

This means 6 cookies were eaten.
