You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Total children: 53

Children that had neither: 8

Children that had something: 53 - 8 = 45

Children that had ice cream plus children that had cold drinks = 30 + 23 = 53.

53 is 8 more than 45, so 8 of the children must have been counted twice when adding the 30 plus the 23. Hence, 8 had both. If 30 had ice cream and 8 had both, then 30 minus 8 = 22 had ice cream only. If 23 had cold drinks and 8 had both, then 23 minus 8 = 15 had cold drinks only.

Check:

22 ice cream only

15 cold drink only

8 both

8 nothing

22 + 15 + 8 + 8 = 53
