A hot air balloon spent several minutes ascending.
let t = time ascending
:
It then stayed at a level altitude for two times as long as it had ascended.
2t = time at level altitude
:
It took 6 minutes less to descend than it did to ascend.
(t-6) = time to descend
:
The entire trip took one hour and 10 minutes.
Change 1 hr 10 min to 70 min
:
ascend time + lev time + descend time = 70 min
t + 2t + (t-6) = 70
4t = 70 + 6
t = 76/4
t = 19 min to ascend
:
For how long was the balloon at a level altitude?
2(19) = 38 min at level altitude
