Draw a rectangle that is longer than it is tall.
Along the bottom and top lengths label them 14 ft.
Along the left and right side heights label them 11 ft.

Draw a square with all sides about the same length.
Label each side 12 ft.

A = length x width
...
A(rectangle) = 14 ft x 11 ft = 154 ft^2
A(square) = 12 ft x 12 ft = 144 ft^2
...
Carpet for both rooms is 154 ft^2 + 144 ft^2 = 298 ft^2
At the price of $2.00 per ft^2,
298 ft^2 x $2.00 /ft^2 = $596
