The function gives the height at time . The ground is height zero. Set your function equal to zero and solve the quadratic for . You will get one positive and one negative root. Since you don't care what happened BEFORE she hit the ball, discard the negative root.

And tell her to lay off those high ones. The given function models a ball hit when it was 4 feet off of the ground and given the low initial velocity, I'm figuring her for a middle schooler (12 to 13 years old) using a wooden bat against a pitcher of average skill. Hence 4 feet off the ground is somewhere up around her chin.
