How fast does each bicyclist travel?
:
Let s = R's speed
then
(s+8) = J's speed
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
J's time = R's time
54%2F%28%28s%2B8%29%29 = 30%2Fs
Cross multiply
54s = 30(s+8)
54s = 30s + 240
54s - 30s = 240
24s = 240
s = 240%2F24
s = 10 mph is R's speed
then
10 + 8 = 18 mph is J's speed
