Let x = number of words on the list (this is unknown for now)

Since you "have memorized 12 words on the list" and "that is 2/3's the list", this means that . Ie take 2 thirds of x to get 12.

Now multiply both sides by 3 to get (12*3=36)

Now divide both sides by 2 to get (36/2 = 18)

So there are 18 words on the list.

So two-thirds of 18 is 12.
