I wonder if you copied the problem exactly?
Anyway, I'm assuming there is an "is" after the word "number".
If so the equation will look like this if we have x represent the number:
2+4x=6x-8
Subtract 4x and add 8 to both sides to get:
10=2x
Divide by 2:
x=5
Make sense?
(Note: The word "is" in word problems usually stand for "=" equal signs.)
