Question 337043: This is one of our 4th graders math problems. My husband and I are usually good about helping him but for some reason this just confused us. Thanks for your help. He does have to show his work on his paper. Thank you again.
Each Morning Jarilyn runs a total distance of 42 city blocks and always chooses a rectangular running path. This morning her rectangular path was twice as long as it was wide. How many blocks long and how many blocks wide was this mornings rectangular path?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Jarilyn is running around a path in the shape of a rectangle.
This means we are dealing with the perimeter if a rectangle.
The formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2L + 2W, where L is the length and w is the width.
Let P = perimeter
We are told that the length is twice as long as the width but we have no idea what the width is.
Let width = x
Let length = 2x
Let P = 42
We plug that into the perimeter formula above.
P = 2L + 2W
42 = 2 times (2x) + 2x
42 = 4x + 2x
42 = 6x
42/6 = x
7 = x
The width of the rectangular path is 7 and the length is twice 7 or 14.

..
Let width of area covering 42 blocks be x
length = 2*x = 2x.
..
He runs round the 42 blocks in rectangular path.
Perimeter = 42 blocks
Perimeter P = 2*(L+W)
2*(x+2x)=42
2*3x=42
6x=42
divide by 6
6x/6 = 42/6
x= 7 blocks width
length = 2*x = 2*7 =14 blocks
..
CHECK
7+7+14+14==42 Blocks

Since the total number of blocks that Jarilyn ran was 42 blocks and her path was a rectangle, we can say that the perimeter of this rectangle is 42.
The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is:
P+=+2%28L%2BW%29 where L = length and W = width. and P is given as 42, so...
42+=+2%28L%2BW%29 If we divide both sides of the equation by 2, we get...
21+=+L%2BW.
But we are told that the length (L) is twice as long as the width (W) or L+=+2W so we can put this in place of L in the formula for the perimeter.
21+=+%282W%29%2BW which simplifies to...
21+=+3W and if we divide both sides by 3, we get...
7+=+W and L+=+2%287%29 = 14
The length of her run was 14 blocks and the width was 7 blocks.
This seems a little advanced for fourth grade math!
