Each Morning Jarilyn runs a total distance of 42 city blocks and always chooses a rectangular running path. This morning her rectangular path was twice as long as it was wide. This means we are dealing with the perimeter if a rectangle.
The formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2L + 2W, where L is the length and w is the width.
Let P = perimeter
We are told that the length is twice as long as the width but we have no idea what the width is.
Let width = x
Let length = 2x
Let P = 42
We plug that into the perimeter formula above.
P = 2L + 2W
42 = 2 times (2x) + 2x
42 = 4x + 2x
42 = 6x
42/6 = x
7 = x
The width of the rectangular path is 7 and the length is twice 7 or 14.
